One of the best places for fishing that people have found are flats. But it’s important to know how to have the best chance of being successful in fishing. Below are three tips that you can use when you are fishing in the flats.
If you are able to see the fish, assume that the fish are able to see you. Fish in the flats are able to see clothing that is bright, especially when your hat or shirt is brightly colored. Avoid wearing bright yellow, bright red or white shirts and hats. Wearing a darker green can help you blend in with the sea grass that are on flats; and a light or dark blue can help you blend in with the sky. Having good polarized sunglasses will increase your chance of seeing the fish also before they may see you.
When you’re fishing in water that is shallow, the fish that are there are going to negatively respond to the noise, even voices. If you want to have a better chance of catching fish, imagine you’re stalking some wild animals that you don’t want to hear you. Talking loudly and stomping or dropping things in the boat can spook fish away from you.
When you see a fish within your casting range and don’t strike right away, you may find that your window of opportunity has gone by. Either your fish is too far away so that you aren’t able to reach it or it’s way too close. You should take your chance and mess up, then learn from the mistake you made than to always wonder what would have happened. You also do not want to land your bait right on the head of the fish because it can spook them a lot of times. Casting your bait 10 yards in front of the fish in the direction it’s swimming and then reeling it towards them can be a deadly presentation that a lot of times they can’t resist.
These are three tips that you can use when you’re flat fishing. They’ll help you be successful and have a good time when you’re on a fishing trip.
